Reading Eurasia in its regional context

Eurasia Frontier Strategic Institute studies the political, economic and strategic relationships connecting Europe, Central Asia and the South Caucasus.

Eurasia is not a single political or commercial landscape. The South Caucasus, Central Asia and the Black Sea connect through transport, energy and diplomacy while retaining distinct institutions and local priorities. EFSI’s focus is to make these connections legible without flattening the differences between countries.

The work begins with the differences between places: institutions, languages, resource needs and historical relationships. A regional comparison is useful only when these differences remain visible. EFSI therefore treats country-level context as the foundation for examining wider corridors, partnerships and strategic choices.

Inquiry before conclusion

Analysis should explain how a judgement was reached. Public documents, datasets and regional accounts are compared rather than combined indiscriminately. Where evidence is incomplete or contradictory, the uncertainty belongs in the assessment.

Research can support a written brief, an extended thematic study or a focused discussion. The purpose and intended audience are agreed first; the length and format follow the question, not the other way around.

Principles of the work

  1. Regional specificity

Distinguish national and local conditions from broad descriptions of a region. Explain the context behind a policy or institution.

  2. Traceable evidence

Keep dates, source links and distinctions between statements, observations and interpretation visible in the research process.

  3. Open questions

State the limits of a finding and the additional information needed to test it. Alternative explanations are part of serious analysis.
